Looking for Repetition

Abstract Expressionism

Philip Guston
Zone (1953-54)

Color, line, texture
Chaos- because it seems really random and chaotic. The red splatters/lines concentrated in the center of the canvas aren't orderly at all.

Philip Guston
Painting No.9 -1952

Color,line,texture
Chaos same as his last piece the piece isn't orderly at all...its very random and makes you wonder what the artist was trying to say within this piece.

Robert Rauschenberg
Bed -1955

texture,color,shape, line
closer to contrast and chaos rather than harmony. The pattern on the fabric is very orderly but then the artist ripped the fabric which gives the piece a very neat texture and look. This middle section in the piece is very messy and makes me think that its disintegrating.

Robert Rauschenberg
Choke- 1964

color,shape,line
contrast because it isn't completely chaotic (close) but its not really in harmony. The repetition is seen in the strokes and the segments of color. The colors that the artist chose are contrasting, the red and yellow are bright colors in the center of the page vertically(for the most part... some red at the very bottom), while the blue and black surround it  and sort of go horizontally along the page.

Minimalism

Carl Andre
           - 1977

shape,texture

monotony this piece is very orderly the cubes are perfectly stacked on top of each other to for another cube. I really like how the artist really payed attention to the cracks within the wood, this really helps with the repetition.

Carl Andre
144 Graphite Silence -2005

shape,space,vaule
harmony it is very orderly but not to the point of monotony because of the shadows created by the lighting and the boxes creating a new type of pattern/repetition. I didn't see the shadows at first now that I do its really cool how they gradually get bigger as you continue in towards the center rows of cubes.

John Duff
Tie Piece 1969

color,line
harmony because the ties are laid out a certain way perfectly beside each other. I don't really see a pattern within the ties (color and pattern on the ties) which is why its not monotony.

Untitled-

Color, shape
harmony it is a very organized pattern that creates a column. the artist uses color switching back in forth from blue to red, but the size and shape of the rectangles/cubes vary in size depending on the color.

Post-Minimalism

Berry Le Va
 Untitled- 1966

color, shape, texture
contrasting and chaos since it seems random rather than orderly. But it mostly looks like pieces of cloth were thrown onto the floor in color coordination.

Barry Le Va
Cleaved Wall, 1969-70

shape,line
monotony and harmony are represented...this is another piece where the shadows play a part of the piece. Also the angles of the knives move in a wave like pattern. Still not very sure why the artist chose to do this piece...

Dan Flavin
Untitled-1973

shape, line,color
Harmony since the piece is a continuous pattern of boxes containing the same color lighting(green) which is very organized/orderly.  The rooms lighting is very dim which allows the piece to really light up and cast a reflection onto the floor which adds to the effect of this piece.

Untitled- 1977

color, line, shape
Harmony..this piece is very organized. The light strips are organized by color (3 red, 3 yellow). Also the strips create a grid, like a chess board. Not really sure where the blue and green lights are coming from...

color,texture
harmony the repeated pencils are forming a shape. The pencils are organized and angled in different directions to create and object. It makes me think of a cave...really cool.

Ibentina- 2008

Again the artist is sticking with harmony. the piece is very organized...reminds me of coral, its very unique...
 Daniel Hesidence
Untitled- 2005

Color, line, shape,value
closer to contrast and chaos rather than harmony. Its very wavy and dream like looking. The colors are very distinct in the middle and as the recede to the outside edges they gradually lose the brightness of color. Also, the whole piece is kind of circular...like all the color is contained in a ball.

Daniel Hesidence
Untitled-2005

Color, shape, line,value
Harmony...this piece is very contained. There are boxes (looks like a ceiling tiles) that have very distinct lines that gives off the feeling that everything is contained within this piece, nothing leaves. then there is the green wavy lines that flow unconcerned by its captivity.
